Join us for some holiday cheer!

The Whitemud Equine Learning Centre Association (WELCA) is a not-for-profit that provides a combination of educational and recreational space for equestrian lovers in the heart of the City.

The oldest building on the property is the Keillor Log Cabin which was built in 1919. The now-demolished indoor riding arena was built in 1959 by Leo Lemieux, Cliff Ross and Bill Collins when it was known as LeeColl Stables. In 1978, Grant McEwan College ran its Equine Studies Program at the stables using a set of old ATCO trailers. WELCA has operated the stable since 1998 and required a refresh to their existing facility. In 2014, the City of Edmonton approved a 6.5 million dollar redevelopment of the entire site.

Arrow’s Mechanical, Electrical and Civil teams were commissioned to work on the construction of a new building for WECA, which houses an indoor riding arena, stables, and administration / learning areas, intended to replace existing, aging structures. Given the high-use nature of this public facility, design was required to be undertaken with long life-expectancy in mind.

A WELCA staff member will lead us on a tour of the facility and provide some history, background, project challenges and how the usage evolved from a college run centre to what they are today.
